Hearts First

Started out this year wanting to do a ride for the BHF. I think I tempted fate because no sooner had I signed up to the South Downs ride, my own heart problems returned to get me. After treatment I had to get back on the bike, it was getting to me not being able to cycle. Soon as my problems were fixed it was time to get back on the bike.... So

The Chain Breaker.
Sunday 14th, 4 hour endurance race around Sandwell Valley in the Midlands. It was going great, I got there early to sign in and have the rider brief then they told us it was a running start.... Your having a laugh I thought. From the start we had to run a lap around the showground so the competitors were spread out at the start. It was miles... actually about a quarter of a mile but it seemed like miles. Felt like my lungs were gonna explode. I got on the bike and made a start, about 4 miles into the first 9 mile lap I started slowing down, I was feeling sick.. the drinks I had before the start weren't the best thing to have. A mile on from there it was game over, I wanted to stop. Got off the bike and was sick, after sitting for a while I carried on at a much slower pace. That was the ticket there was still three and half hours to go. Going too hard from the outset was a wounder; did the same in the marathon and had to back off. I've learned my lesson, on next years rides I'll have practiced pacing myself. I managed 5 laps, 45 miles in 3:45. Cool! I was expecting to do four. It was a good ride and I'll do it again next year.
The first lap was a disaster, half way round a marshall sent me off to the right, I was soon met by a guy coming the other way saying he didn't know where he was going. Went back to marshall to ask and he didn't know either. Dopey old git didn't know what day it was. He got on his radio, " eeerrrmmm excuse me... it's a marshall on the chain breaker...... where am they all gooin.....? " a reply came back, "Marshall where are you!" he replied "I'm on the path by the pool near a tree", Which pool? That was enough so I followed a local guy back to the show ground and soon got back on track. Funny, we didn't see that guy on the next lap...
The pictures you see were taken by a company selling them from their website. I lifted these off the site that's why they're copyright protected. Good business that. The guys sit down in the middle of the woods and take pictures. Then sell em for £15. I've bought one, these are the only pictures of me in action. I'm never prepared enough to ask a mate to get some pictures. So now you know about the Chain Breaker.. I raised just under £100 this year with sponsors from the South Downs and from this event. Thanks to all who helped and gave sponsorship.

Great Legs and I got a medal
You see this, I cycled for a good cause and because I come about 75th out of 90 my boy calls me a loser. lol
